At 13-32 the Miami Marlins have the worst record in all of baseball. The club’s early season struggles has team brass making moves with some of its star players.

While rumors continue to swirl concerning former All-Star second baseman/outfielder Jazz Chisholm Jr., the team did unload former two-time batting champion Luis Arraez in a trade with the San Diego Padres.

Dillon Head Comes In Arraez Trade

That trade netted the Marlins some nice pieces, including 2023 first round pick Dillon Head. The talented outfielder was immediately assigned to the Jupiter Hammerheads the Marlins Single-A affiliate.

After being out with tendinitis in his shoulder since being traded, Head didn’t disappoint in his debut for the club.

The dynamic speedster displayed a solid bat last season in 54 games he batted a respectable .262 with 56 hits, 21 RBI and two homers. Head’s production and potential makes him the biggest piece of the trade, and why the Marlins felt okay trading away Arraez.

Head Shows Up Big In Debut

After nearly two weeks of rehab, the 19-year-old Head finally got the opportunity to showcase his skill set with his new team. the former Homewood-Flossmoor High School legend tallied three hits including a triple.

He also drove in a run (his first with the team), and he stole two bases in two attempts. In all it was a banner night for Head, and following the game he’d climbed to the No.5 spot on the Marlins prospects rankings.

Known for his speed both offensively and defensively, Head told reporters this prior to his trade from the Padres. He calls his speed his biggest and best tool.

“My speed and being able to get on base and score runs. On the defensive side, being able to cover a ton of ground in the outfield and maybe make some outs that are usually hits.”

The Marlins are getting a confident teenager who’s only going to get better as he develops in the minors.

“I am just ready to come in every day and be as consistent as I can. Just go out there and help the team to win.”

Head’s Call-Up Is Tentatively Scheduled For 2027

With an expected 2027 call-up for Head, there’s plenty of time to prepare for the majors. But there’s also a belief amongst team brass that if he develops at the rate that they expect him too, he could get the call earlier.

That would be good for a Marlins franchise that has longtime fans very frustrated with the constant rebuilds. In fact, some fans have voiced their displeasure with the Arraez trade and the team still looking to unload some more of their top tier talent.

Head isn’t going to be able to do it on his own, but if he pans out, he’ll definitely bring some much-needed joy to the current beleaguered fanbase.
