Having a career season is one thing for a professional athlete, but having a career season as a professional athlete in Major League Baseball for the New York Yankees is truly something special.
For Trent Grisham, his career-high 33 home runs is something that those who follow baseball did not have on their bingo card. The magical season has helped the Bronx Bombers stay in the thick of their postseason push as Grisham crushed two more home runs against the Minnesota Twins in their 10-5 win at Target Field to take the rubber game in the series on Wedensday night.
“It’s been a massive year for him,” manager Aaron Boone said. “Whether he’s going through a little lull or he’s on a hot streak where he’s hitting for power, it’s just a good at-bat and obviously there’s been a lot of big homers he’s hit for us, a lot of big hits.”
Trent Grisham Has Career-High 33 Bro Bombs: Breaks Out Of 1-for-25 Slump
For the first time since Sept. 7, the Yankees (85-67) picked up a game on the Blue Jays (who own the tiebreaker), trimming their lead atop the AL East to four games. In the more realistic race, the Yankees continue to hold on to the top AL wild card, leading both the Mariners and Red Sox by two games entering Thuirsday night’s action. Through Monday, Trent Grisham had been stuck in a 1-for-25 rut over his past eight games. But then he homered in Tuesday night’s offensive explosion before adding two more home runs on Wednesday against Twins right-hander Taj Bradley.
The win preceded another late night for the Yankees, who for the second time on this 10-day, 10-game trip were playing a getaway game at night and coming off dull offensive performances.
“I think what happened speaks to the guys we have in the clubhouse, the guys we have in that lineup,” said Grisham, whose second home run was a three-run shot that made it 6-2 in the fourth inning. “Just a resilient group. They fight a lot. Up and down the lineup, it’s just tough AB after tough AB. … It’s just who we are.”
Trent Grisham has 33 home runs and an .825 OPS to go along with 71 runs batted in and a 3.6 bWar. The former first round pick was possibly on his last leg in New York with the Yankees. However, Grisham only has nine doubles in over 540 plate appearances. And, as Yankees stats expert Katie Sharp pointed out, Grisham’s lack of extra-base hits puts him on pace to join an exclusive club.
Trent Grisham Joins 30+ Homer Fewer than 10 Doubles Club
Grisham is currently one of only three players in MLB history with at least 32 home runs and fewer than 10 doubles in a season, joining McGwire (32 homers and eight doubles in 2000) and Dave Kingman (37 home runs and nine doubles for the 1982 New York Mets). If Grisham doesn’t double in the Yankees’ final 10 games, he’ll become the first player in American League history to achieve the feat. McGwire’s 32-homer, eight-double season came with the St. Louis Cardinals.
Trent Grisham Will Hit Open Market Looking For A Significant Bag: Cubs Or Mets?
Grisham, a pending free agent who turns 29 on Nov. 1, picked the perfect time to have a career season. Barring injury, he’ll hit the open market in a prime position to command a significant contract. Grisham’s defense alone boosts his value, and we’re sure that at least one team will buy high on his improved power stroke. The Chicago Cubs make perfect sense, especially if they lose Kyle Tucker in free agency, and the New York Mets’ summer collapse has only highlighted their need for a reliable center fielder. Stories like Grisham are always fun to see how they play out with the playoffs on the horizon.
