Houston Astros rookie Brice Matthews is making the most of his second year in the big leagues. The 24-year-old has shown signs of promise and is making a name for himself on the field. Through 39 games, he’s carrying a .204 batting average with four home runs, 13 RBI, and 12 runs scored.

Throughout the season, Matthews has had some success at the plate. In his first game of the season, he recorded a double against the Los Angeles Angels. He then hit his first home run of the season during the Astros third game of the year against the Boston Red Sox.

His best performance at the plate this year came back in April against the Baltimore Orioles. He had the first three-hit game of his career, finishing with a home run, double, and a single. He also added two RBI as well.

“It felt really good,” Matthews said about his homer in his first at-bat against Baltimore. “Just trying to put the bat on the ball more. Not trying to do too much. I feel like if I hit the ball on the barrel, the ball is going to go. So just trying to simplify and just shorten up and just keep it easy.”

That performance against the Orioles was a snippet of Mathews’ talent and what he brings to the Astros.

Houston’s manager, Joe Espada, knows how talented a player Matthews is and knows what he can bring to the team, which led the three-year head coach to call up Matthews 94 games into the 2025 season.

“I keep saying, when he finds barrel to ball, he’s exciting to watch,” Espada said. “He’s a very explosive player. He can change outcomes of the game when he learns to be more consistent making contact.”

Matthews, he knew that he was ready for the big stage and that he could have success playing in the big leagues.

The work he’s put in to get to where he is now is paying off.

“This was something I always thought I could do,” he said. “It wasn’t like a surprise for me. I know I have the capability. I feel like I could do that each and every night, but baseball, it’s not going to go your way each and every night.”

Matthews Is Doing It With The Bat & The Glove

Not only can Matthews make an impact at the plate, but he can also do so in the field as well. At the beginning of the month, the Astros pulled out a 6-3 win over the Red Sox, and Matthews had a big impact on that game.

He hit a three-run homer and made a leaping catch at the wall in centerfield to stop a potential big inning for Boston.

During his time with the Astros, Matthews has played multiple positions in the field, between the infield and outfield. That just shows his versatility and that the Astros can utilize him where they need him to play.

He’s already made appearances at second and third base this season in addition to playing centerfield and left field.

Matthew will have the opportunity to make a name for himself during his rookie season this year, and he’s the type of player who can go on to have a solid career.
