The Tampa Bay Rays have gotten off to a slow start at 2–4, losing road series against the St. Louis Cardinals and the Milwaukee Brewers. Although the wins have yet to come in abundance, one positive is second-year MLBbro Chandler Simpson and his early hitting prowess.

After showing promise as a rookie his game has elevated to the next level. There are many reasons that could have contributed to this, but the help of veteran leadership is a direct result.

Chandler Simpson Is Even Better In Year 2

Simpson has moved to left field in 2026 to accommodate the addition of fellow MLBbro Cedric Mullins. The two have helped form a dynamic outfield defined by speed and elite range. While Mullins has struggled offensively out of the gate, his early influence on Simpson is already noticeable. As a left-handed hitter and former All-Star, Mullins brings experience and a polished approach at the plate that can elevate Simpson’s game. Mullins has long possessed five-tool talent, while Simpson’s calling card has been his elite speed. Learning how to consistently get on base will be the key to unlocking Simpson’s full potential at the major league level.

Out of the gate, Simpson is batting .476 with a .522 on-base percentage (OBP). And while he has only two stolen bases so far, that number could climb toward Rickey Henderson-like territory if he continues to reach base at a high clip. Even with his natural speed, there is still room for growth in reading pitchers and maximizing opportunities—areas that Mullins, a proven 30–30 player, can provide valuable insight. Simpson stole 44 bases in 109 games last season; if he can maintain an OBP around .350 or higher over a full season, approaching 70 stolen bases is well within reach.

Cedric Mullins’ Mentorship Is Already Showing

As the season progresses, the Rays’ early struggles may ultimately serve as a launching point rather than a setback. The chemistry developing between MLBbros Simpson and Mullins could become a defining strength for this team, both offensively and defensively. If Simpson continues to refine his approach and take advantage of veteran mentorship, he has the potential to emerge as one of the league’s most electrifying young players. In turn, that growth could help spark a turnaround for Tampa Bay and position them as a dangerous contender as the year unfolds.
