The Cincinnati Reds have been without their all-star pitcher, Hunter Greene, since the beginning of June. Greene was placed on the 15-day injured list with a right groin strain back on June 4. With a little over two months left in the regular season, the Reds find themselves in a position to potentially snatch a Wild Card playoff spot. Through 112 games this season, Cincinnati is in the fourth slot in the wild card standings. There are three wild card spots in each division for the postseason.
Hunter Greene Machine’s Last Start Was June 3
And the Reds’ starting rotation has been doing all that it can, without the presence of Greene. There’s no question that Greene knows what’s at stake and he wants to get back out there on the mound and help his team make a postseason push. Greene’s last start was on June 3 against the Milwaukee Brewers. He finished with a no-decision, going five innings, giving up two runs on seven hits, and striking out three. On the season, he has a 4-3 record through 11 starts with a 2.72 ERA and 73 strikeouts. Four of Cincinnati’s starting pitchers have eight or more wins. Andrew Abbott has been the team’s most dominant pitcher with an 8-1 record and 2.15 ERA.
The addition of rookie sensation Chase Burns has provided some firepower to the starting rotation. But the Reds will be glad to have their ace back in the rotation.
Cincinnati Reds Are Pleased With Hunter Greene’s Health Prognosis
Now there’s no question that the Reds want to be cautious and monitor Greene heavily as he’s in the rehab process.
“The MRI came back [and] we’re really pleased with it,” Reds manager Terry Francona said in July about Greene’s injury. “He’s still feeling it at times. I think there’s not a lot of confidence there yet. I think it feels fatigued. We want to do the right thing. Sometimes, it’s very difficult. That’s why we got the MRI. You ask somebody to go out there, let it loose and go 100 mph, you don’t want them worrying about something.”
If you rush Greene and put him back on the mound and he’s not 100 percent healthy, who knows what further damage could be done? And that is something you certainly don’t want to risk.
“We’re going to take some steps to try to get him a little more time, so when he does go out, he’s raring to go,” Francona said.
Hunter Greene Has Made Three Rehab Appearances
Greene has made three rehab appearances since landing on the IL and his last outing came on Sunday. In his outing with Triple-A Louisville, he gave up two unearned runs and struck out seven over three and ⅓ innings. The 25-year-old will continue to work hard on getting his groin to 100 percent so he can get back out there on that mound and do what he does best.
