The Miami Marlins are once again in the midst of a season that doesn’t seem to be going anywhere. Currently sitting at (22-32) and last place in the NL East, the Marlins will likely be sellers at the July 31st MLB Trade Deadline.

With a bevy of talented prospects in the club’s farm system including five in MLB Pipeline’s Top 100 prospects, the future in South Beach is bright. One of their top prospects is dynamic outfielder Dillon Head. The speedy and crafty Head was originally drafted by the San Diego Padres with the 25th overall pick in the 2023 MLB Draft but traded to the Miami Marlins in May of last year in a blockbuster deal that sent star second baseman Luis Arraez to the Padres.

Head Is Back After Season-Ending Hip Injury Following 2024 Trade to Miami Marlins

After missing nearly, a year on the diamond following season-ending hip surgery last June, the still only 20-year-old Head finally returned to the field. His return to play has been nothing short of sensational, as the former Clemson who starred at Homewood-Flossmoor High School outside of Chicago has been a terror on the base paths. In fact, he’s currently stealing them at 90 percent clip (18-20) which is good enough for second-most in the Florida State League.

Speaking with reporters in March, Head expressed how the injury made him feel.

“It was difficult,” Head said in March about the time missed. “I’ve been playing this game all my life, and I never had to sit out for injury like that. But I think that time away from the game was needed, so I was able to regroup, refocus, come back even stronger.”

“Obviously it’s frustrating, but everything happens for a reason,” Head said. “God put me in that situation for a reason. So, you just take everything and learn from it and get better at it.”

Head’s Elite Speed Not Effected By Surgery

Known for his game breaking speed and fast twitch ability, the fear for Head following the surgery was that it would be compromised. Thus far that hasn’t been the case, and his numbers tell the story. Head leads the Jupiter Hammerheads in runs (25), hits (35), triples (5) and he also tied for the team lead with two bro bombs.

Head is also tied for second in games with (38) and ranks third in RBI (17) and walks with 20.

With an expected 2028 arrival to the majors, Head has plenty of time to prove that he’s still the dangerous weapon that was taken in the first-round of the 2023 MLB Draft straight out of high school.
