Rookie sensation Drake Baldwin is making a statement for the Atlanta Braves, batting an impressive .329. His hot streak at the plate is quickly turning heads and proving he belongs in the big leagues. Baldwin, who has split time behind the plate with veteran Sean Murphy, has had a huge impact on helping the Braves win seven of their last 10, including the first two of a four-game series against the Washington Nationals.

He went 2-for-3 at the plate, delivering key hits that helped spark the Braves’ offense to a 4-3 win on Monday. He was also 3-for-4 with a double, a home run and two RBIs on Tuesday to lift his batting average to .329.

Drake Baldwin Could Become First Black Catcher To Hit. 300 Since Charles Johnson

The last Black catcher to hit .300 was Charles Johnson in 2000, who hit .304 splitting time between the Baltimore Orioles and Chicago White Sox. His poised performance not only highlighted his growing confidence but also showed his ability to rise to the occasion when it matters most. As he continues to impress, Baldwin is making a compelling case for an even larger role in the Braves’ lineup moving forward.

Charles Johnson Is The Last Notable Black Catcher, But He Wasn’t The First

Baldwin began his pro career in 2022, getting his start in the rookie league before moving up to Single-A, where he hit .258 in limited action. In 2023, he climbed quickly through the Braves’ farm system, starting in High-A, earning a promotion to Double-A in August, and finishing the season in Triple-A. Over the year, he put together a strong performance, hitting .270 with solid power numbers, including 16 home runs and 61 RBIs.

He began the 2024 season back in Double-A but was promoted to Triple-A by June. His standout play earned him a spot in the prestigious All-Star Futures Game. After the season, he continued to build his résumé with selections to both the Arizona Fall Leagues.

As many know, making the jump to the majors is a whole different ball game — and Drake Baldwin has embraced the challenge with confidence and poise. Not only has he impressed with his plate discipline and consistent bat, but his defensive skills behind the plate have also been turning heads.

Drake Baldwin Shows Poise Behind The Plate & At Bat: Will He Switch Positions?

Since making his big-league debut this season as the Braves’ young catcher, Baldwin has shown maturity beyond his years. He’s recorded seven assists and committed just two errors, showcasing a strong arm, quick reflexes, and a high baseball IQ. His ability to manage the pitching staff and control the game from behind the plate has quickly earned the respect of teammates, coaches, and fans alike.

With a bright future ahead, Drake Baldwin is making a strong case for more playing time. After sharing time behind the plate, the big question around town is where the Braves will position Baldwin for the long haul. Despite a rocky start to the season, the Braves have bounced back in impressive fashion, securing a solid series win against the Pittsburgh Pirates and showing signs of hitting their stride. Baldwin’s growing role in the lineup only adds to the excitement surrounding the team’s future.

“He’s helping us win games,” said Braves manager Brian Snitker to The Athletic.

As Baldwin continues to make an impact with both his bat and his defense, it’s clear that the young catcher has a bright future ahead. Helping the Braves, who started the season 0-7, scrape back to .500 is a great start.
