A Brutha Broadcaster has been named the new voice of the New York Yankees. Mariners TV announcer Dave Sims was named WFAN’s new play-by-play broadcaster on Yankees games, the station announced Thursday.

“The radio voice of the Yankees is a storied position in the history of baseball,” said Chris Oliviero, New York Market President, Audacy in a statement. “From Allen and Barber to Rizzuto to Sterling, the names are synonymous with the pinstripes. Dave Sims is a worthy successor to that lineage. We are honored to have Dave join the incomparable Suzyn Waldman in the booth in the Bronx.”

Simms is a pioneer in play-by-play broadcasting for Black voices. He has style, his calls are electric and he brings decades of professional experience that should mesh well with Waldman who is still as sharp as a tact and is a walking encyclopedia of NY Yankees history.

If Sims were a ballplayer (and he was up to a point) he’d be described as a “five-tool” practitioner of his profession. He’s done everything from print to radio and television, covering some of the biggest events across the sports world.
..the play-by-play color palette remains essentially the same all across baseball, the lead voices who narrate the game remain almost entirely white and male, devoid of both racial and gender diversity.

Replacing John Sterling, who had a legendary 36-year run as the radio voice of the Bronx Bombers and called his final Yankees games in the 2024 playoffs isn’t an easy task.

Sims has earned his shot at the big time.

Congratulations Dave Sims.
