The New York Mets will pay tribute to historical Black figures and former MLBbro Mets at their fourth annual Black Legacy Game on Wednesday, June 24 at Citi Field against the Chicago Cubs.
The first 15,000 fans in attendance for the 7:10 game will receive a complimentary Marcus Semien replica jersey. MLBbro Semien, a three-time All-Star, two-time Silver Slugger winner at second base and World Series champion, joined the Mets this offseason.
Donovan Mitchell Sr., Mets Senior Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and Player Relations, led the launch of the Black Legacy Game and has played, coached or worked for New York since 1999. His son is NBA star Donovan Mitchell.
“(Mets owners) The Cohens have been great in giving us the platform to put something like this together,” Mitchell Sr. said at the 2025 game in The Source. “We want this to be a special night. It’s not just about baseball; it’s about history, culture, and unity.”
The Mets held the inaugural Black Legacy Game in June 2024 to celebrate Juneteenth. The 2024 and 2025 games were in honor of Jackie Robinson Day in April.
Prior Black Legacy Games have celebrated former Black Mets like Ed Charles, Darryl Starawberry, Dwight “Doc” Gooden, Hubie Brooks and Mookie Wilson, who’s 10th-inning at-bat completed a 1986 World Series Game 6 rally over Boston before a Game 7 Mets win.
The Mets have also hosted Spike Lee and Jackie Robinson’s wife Rachel and his son David. They’ve highlighted significant Black historical figures such as Thurgood Marshall and Florence Giffith Joyner.
The Miami Marlins hosted their own South Florida Black Legacy night on Juneteenth and defeated the San Francisco Giants 4-3. Miami had for purchase exclusive No. 42 Marlins jerseys, honoring Jackie Robinson’s role in integrating baseball.
