In the world of Major League Baseball, shortstop has long been one of the most celebrated positions on the field. It is a spot that demands athleticism, baseball IQ, leadership, and, often, an uncanny ability to make the impossible play look effortless.

Two young MLBbros, Masyn Winn and CJ Abrams, are making waves in the MLB and showcasing the potential for a new generation of players. Their skills, determination, and bright futures not only elevate their teams but also signify the growth of Black representation in a position traditionally dominated by a select few.

Masyn Winn: The Dynamic Defender still needs work at the Plate

Masyn Winn, 23, is a MLBbro who has garnered attention for his exceptional blend of speed, arm strength, and defensive prowess. Drafted by the Cardinals in the second round of the 2020 MLB Draft, Winn immediately turned heads with his dynamic ability on both sides of the ball.

Winn’s most remarkable attribute is his arm. He has a cannon, one of the strongest in baseball. It’s a trait that has made him a top-tier defensive shortstop. His defense has been a cornerstone of his game early this season. His offense has gotten off to a slow start, but in the last week Winn is batting .348, tallying eight hits and two walks across six games. His on-base percentage is still hovering around the .314 mark which was on par with last year, but if he can continually improve at the plate, he can become a premier shortstop. Just 23, he has time to improve, and the Cardinals have time to allow the MLBbro to develop at a good pace.

CJ Abrams: A Rising Star with Incredible Athleticism

CJ Abrams, another young MLBbro shortstop, has already been making waves in Washington. Fresh off his first all-star selection in 2024, he is poised to rise further into stardom. Known for his incredible speed, agility, and bat-to-ball skills, Abrams is batting .250 with four homers, seven RBO and a .879 OPS.

Like Winn, Abrams is known for his athleticism, and he possesses a unique combination of speed, power and defensive acumen. Last season he hit 20 homers and stole 31 bases. This season, the MLBbro already has three stolen bases. Defensively, he’s smooth, fluid and earning comparisons to some of the best at the position. At just 24 years old, he still has the potential to develop it over time. The MLBbro bats leadoff for the Nationals and his baseball IQ is another thign that sets him apart.

CJ Abrams Is Fast, Powerful & Aggressive at The Plate

When swinging at the first pitch Abrams is batting .364, versus .207 when taking the first pitch, so he may be best set for the second spot in the lineup down the line. With fellow MLBbro James Wood batting behind him for most of the season, he has had the benefit of getting more quality pitches to hit and that can continue and help him to be more productive.

MLBbros Winn and Abrams are both young studs who have shown great IQ and innate skills that are needed to be successful at shortstop. They are just scratching the surface of their potential at the highest level.
