Tempe, ArizonaJordan Lawlar was the first-round pick of the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 2021 Major League Baseball Draft. Despite battling a couple of injuries, he has risen through the minor leagues and made his big league debut in 2023 and appeared in a World Series game.

 

The 6-foot-2, 195-pounder saw 31 games of MLB action in that magical 2023 season for Arizona and spent 2024 battling a spring thumb injury followed by a hamstring, which limited him to 23 minor league games. After fine-tuning his skills playing winter ball in the Dominican Republic, Lawlar is healthy and gearing up for his big break in the 2025 season. The 22-year-old shortstop is ready for a productive season as a potential daily starter.

“Anytime you get to put on those cleats and get out there with the guys it’s always a great time” Lawlar told MLBbro.com reporter Brett Quintyne prior to a Cactus League game in Arizona this week. 

 

Jordan Lawlar Might Move To Second Base Or Third

 

Diamondbacks general manager Mike Hazen said Tuesday that “nothing has changed” regarding the organization’s plans for Lawlar after the team signed starting shortstop Geraldo Perdomo to a four-year extension earlier this week, Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.com reports. “When [he] is ready to be on this team, Lawlar’s gonna be on this team,” Hazen said.

 

Lawlar can also handle a move to second base or even third base, so Arizona has options if he hits his way onto the field this Spring The Texas product has some big league experience but knows there is still work ahead for him.

Why Did Lawlar Choose Baseball Over Basketball?

 

Like so many big leaguers, Lawlar was a star athlete in high school and played multiple sports.

 

“I grew up playing everything. I played a couple years of basketball in high school,” Lawlar tells MLBbrocom. “Undefeated season freshman year” he mentioned. “I can play nasty defense and rebound for you but I’m gonna find my shooter pretty quickly though” Lawlar joked about his current basketball skills.

 

 The No.6 overall pick in the 2021 MLB Draft, talked about what drew him to baseball above the other sports.

 

“The competitiveness of baseball. The one-on-one battles inside the nine guys is what I like,” Lawlar told MLBbro.com. 

Jordan Lawlar’s Hobbies 

 

A Major League Baseball player doesn’t have too much time away from the field especially during the season. Lawlar does have a variety of interests when time allows.

“Cooking is number one, I love to hike, I like the adventures. Of course, time with family and friends” he shared. “I like Italian food, I need to get a bit better at cooking it first, so I’ll eat out for that one” he laughed about his favorite cuisine.

“I’ve always been a big (Derek) Jeter guy, still am. Watched a lot of him and Carlos Correa as well” Lawlar talked about two bros who he admired. Those are two great individuals as both won a Rookie of The Year award and one is in the Hall of Fame.
