On Monday, the Cleveland Guardians fell to the Detroit Tigers 7-5 in the second game of a doubleheader.

But it was a special night for one Guardians player. Right-handed pitcher Xzavion Curry made his major league debut and started for the Guardians.

In his debut, he went five innings, giving up three runs and striking out three. It was a moment Curry will never forget as he stepped on the mound in a big league stadium for the first time as a member of the Guardians.

When he found out that he would be starting, he was filled with so many emotions and tried his best to maintain his composure.

“It was amazing news and I couldn’t keep my emotions under wraps because he (Triple-A manager) said I couldn’t say anything,” he said. “When I first found out I was walking around with a quiet, smiley face, just cheesin.”

After his performance, he gained a lot of confidence in himself.

“Honestly, I learned that I can compete, like I belong here,” Curry said in an article from cleveland.com.

“Obviously I’ve got to work out a little minor things with pitching, but I learned that I can compete and it’s honestly still the same game.”

To be able to say you played in an MLB game is a dream come true for so many players, and now Curry can say those exact words.

Before the Guardians called him up, Curry put together an impressive performance during his time in the minors. A combined 8-4 record with a 3.48 ERA and 113 strikeouts during his time in Double-A and Triple-A.

Cleveland drafted Curry in the seventh round back in the 2019 draft. Guardians manager Terry Francona sees a lot of potential in the 24-year-old.

“We just told him, ‘Man, there’s a lot to like,’” Francona said. “We knew today isn’t what he’s gonna look like a year from now, two years from now, maybe 10, 12 years from now, but he competed really well.”

Curry made his professional debut in 2021 and started out in A ball. He continued to work his way up through the different levels in minor league and fast forward almost a year later, he’s already pitched in his first big league game. The South Carolina native has the potential to be a key part of the Guardians pitching rotation down the line. This is a brother you want to keep your eyes on and don’t be surprised if he gets another opportunity to take the mound for Cleveland this season.
