Glen Kuiper Gets Axed In Aftermath Of N-Word Fiasco, Despite Being Forgiven By Negro Leagues Museum President Bob Kendrick

Glen Kuiper is gone – long gone! The Oakland A’s longtime play-by-play broadcaster was fired on Monday.

 

Kuiper used the N-word live on a May 5 pregame show before the Athletics’ win against the Kansas City Royals. When discussing the Negro American League, he replaced the word “Negro” with the racial slur.

Kuiper issued an apology during the game, saying, “A little bit earlier in the show, I said something that didn’t quite come out the way I wanted it to. I just wanted to apologize if it sounded different than I meant it to be said. I just wanted to apologize for that.”

 

He then issued a formal statement through the network expressing regret for his words.

 

“I could not be more sorry and horrified by what I said. I hope you will accept my sincerest apologies.”

 

Kuiper was initially just suspended but has now been removed from operations altogether. An NBC Sports California spokesperson issued a statement Monday:

 

“Following an internal review, the decision has been made for NBC Sports California to end its relationship with Glen Kuiper, effective immediately. We thank Glen for his dedication to Bay Area baseball over the years.”

 

 

Things have been going sideways for Oakland since the beginning of the season. Fans “reverse boycotting,” a 10-38 record, and then Kuiper’s on-air comment. This is seemingly the first positive thing to come out of the organization this year. Though naturally, some disagree with his removal.

 

He even gained the sympathy of A’s manager Mark Kotsay.

 

“I can’t imagine being in his shoes right now,” Kotsay said. “I think personally, we missed an opportunity here to maybe use this as an educational platform. But as you said, I don’t make decisions and this isn’t a decision I was involved in and nor was the organization really. This was a decision made by NBC.”
