Most players experience a career-defining moment that boosts their confidence at some point of their service time, one that replays in their mind like a highlight-reel on YouTube.
Washington Nationals second baseman Nasim Nuñez lived that on Tuesday, notching two triples, reaching base four total times with two walks and scoring half of the team’s runs in the 6-4 win over the Kansas City Royals. He grabbed his 26th stolen base of the season and made a stellar diving catch as the cherry on top.
The best performance yet of his young career, it encapsulates how strong his June has been, potentially a step in the right direction for the 25-year-old.
Nasim Nunez Provides a Confidence and Edge That Washington Nationals Need On Tough NL East Grind
An Unforgettable June
Nuñez, the 2023 sixth overall pick in the Rule 5 draft, started last season with the Nationals before being sent down in June to Triple-A Rochester Red Wings and called back up in September. He hit .232 in 39 games with 19 RBIs, 13 hits and nine stolen bases.
The Bronx, NY native once again made the Opening Day roster in 2026 and has nearly tripled his steals from the 2025 campaign, the second-most in the MLB just behind Kansas City Royals star shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. Still, he’s struggled to get going at the plate overall, hitting .209 with a .529 OPS, the worst in baseball heading into Tuesday’s contest.
However, those numbers haven’t told the entire story for Nuñez — June has provided much-needed optimism for the third-year player. In 13 games, the second baseman is batting .378, collecting 14 hits and seven RBIs. He followed up Tuesday’s performance with a 2-for-3 day at the plate during Wednesday’s series finale.
Then there’s the production on the defensive end, making a diving catch off Tyler Tolbert’s blooper in the second on Tuesday and another impressive play in the hole to rob Witt of a single up the middle in the first inning on Wednesday.
Although the Nationals have 12 games left in June, Nuñez’s impressive start could be a sign of momentum for the rest of the month.

Hello NL Wildcard
The 6-2 victory wasn’t just a steppingstone for the infielder; it was an accolade for the team as a whole. With it, they moved into the third, and final, wild card spot (39-36) in the National League.
Of course, there’s a boatload of games left in the season, but with 22 of the team’s 81 games remaining in the first half of 2026, it shines light on where the team is at compared to a strong National League East.
And if Nuñez can keep the ball rolling with improvement at the plate, stealing more bases and making head-turning defensive plays, it gives the Nationals another impact player they can lean on.
