NEW YORK – The Yankees have placed right-hander Marcus Stroman on the 15-day Injured List on Saturday afternoon with left knee inflammation. The news comes one day after he pitched his worst game of the season, allowing four runs in ⅔ of an inning in a 9-1 loss to the Giants at Yankees Stadium.
After the game, Yankees manager Aaron Boone announced that Stroman had some x-rays done on his knee at the stadium and then went to the hospital to have more tests done.
“The hope is, it’s not something too serious,” Boone said about Stroman’s injury. “We can attack this. [Hopefully, the injury is] the source [as to why he is not] as sharp as he needs to be. Hopefully we can attack this. It will be something we can benefit from, … get him physically where he needs to be and then translate it on to the mound.”
Stroman is off to one of the worst starts of his career, allowing 12 runs in 9 ⅓ innings, while opposing hitters have a .300 batting average against him. When Spring Training started, Stroman was slated to come off the bullpen, but injuries to Gerrit Cole and Luis Gil prompted the Yankees to put him back in the rotation.
Stroman is in the second and final year of a two-year deal worth $37 million which includes a vesting option for a third year. In his first year with the Bronx Bombers, Stroman appeared in 30 games and was 10-9 with a 4.31 ERA. He was left off the playoff roster for most of the postseason.
