We’re starting to see a changing of the guard in MLB as young players continue to dominate the #HighFive.

Cam Smith, Drake Baldwin, and Charles McAdoo represent a growing group of young MLBbros making an impact or auditioning for larger roles. But Mookie Bets and Josh Bell gave a reminder this week: The veterans aren’t ready to step aside just yet.

1. Cam Smith

Cam Smith picked the perfect time to catch fire.

The 23-year-old went 5-for-10 with three home runs, four RBI and a 1.983 OPS as the Houston Astros took two of three games from the Philadelphia Phillies. Smith homered in every game of the series, saving his biggest swing for last.

His 421-foot shot off Phillies closer Jhoan Duran broke a 1-1 tie in the ninth inning Thursday and gave Houston a 2-1 victory.

For the week, Smith batted .350 with three homers and a triple. More importantly, his late power surge helped the Astros maintain their grip on first place in the American League West.

2. Mookie Betts

Mookie Betts hasn’t had a typical Mookie season, but he’s starting to look like himself at the right time.

Betts batted .348 with eight hits, two home runs, seven RBI and eight runs scored during the week. He also walked four times as the Dodgers won all six games in which he played.

On Sunday, Betts launched a go-ahead three-run homer in the eighth inning to lift Los Angeles over Washington. Three nights later, he went 3-for-5 with another homer, two RBI and three runs as the Dodgers hammered Cincinnati 14-1 for their seventh consecutive victory.

After spending parts of the season dealing with injuries and inconsistency, Betts appears to be rounding back into All-Star form with the postseason approaching.

3. Josh Bell

The Minnesota Twins haven’t been able to maintain much continuity in their lineup, but Josh Bell continues to give them a steady veteran presence in the middle of it.

Bell hit .286 for the week with six hits, two home runs, three RBI and a pair of walks.

He supplied Minnesota’s only run with a homer against the Chicago White Sox on Sept. 4, then closed the week with another strong performance against Detroit. Bell went 2-for-4 Wednesday and homered for the second time in six games.

Even with other key Twins moving in and out of the lineup, Bell continues to show up and produce.

4. Drake Baldwin

Drake Baldwin may not be playing at the torrid pace that put him in the MVP conversation earlier this season, but he remains one of the most dependable hitters in Atlanta’s lineup.

Baldwin collected seven hits over a six-game stretch, recording at least one hit in five of those games. That included three multihit performances and a 419-foot home run against Tampa Bay on Wednesday.

He has also continued to reach base while moving between catcher and designated hitter. With the Braves trying to protect their lead in the National League East, Baldwin’s ability to extend innings and provide quality at-bats has become even more important.

Atlanta’s offense hasn’t always been consistent, but Baldwin continues to help hold it together.

5. Charles McAdoo

Charles McAdoo didn’t receive many opportunities this week, but the former 13th-round pick continued making the most of his audition with the Toronto Blue Jays.

McAdoo recorded hits in two of his three starts, going 2-for-6 with a walk. He singled against Kansas City on Sunday and added another hit Wednesday against the Athletics.

Those aren’t overwhelming numbers, but September is about evaluation for young players like McAdoo. Every quality plate appearance matters.

He has already beaten the odds by reaching the majors. Now McAdoo is trying to prove that he deserves to remain with the big club in 2027.
