Born in Memphis, Tennessee, Kaelen Culpepper always seemed destined to be a star. In 2024, the young shortstop was drafted in the first round by the Minnesota Twins coming out of Kansas State University. After a phenomenal college career, Culpepper’s dominance would only continue as he ran through the minor leagues. He made his way to the majors faster than most. He was in college just 2 years ago, then rushed his way through single A, double A, and triple A in just over a year’s time.
During this time, Kaelen proved he could drive in runs, hit for power, hit for contact, get on base, and steal bases. There’s no shortage of options in his toolbox. Culpepper has been very highly regarded for a while now.
He’s considered a top-100 prospect sitting at number 29 according to MLB Pipeline, and ranks number 2 in the Twins organization next to Khadim Diaw the first ever baseball player to be drafted of Senegalese descent, and Quentin Young son of former Twin Delmon Young, all of which are in the top 15 on Twins top prospects list.
Culpepper Homers In MLB Debut
Culpepper made his debut on August 7th in an away game against the Brewers at American Family Field. In his first at-bat in the top of the second inning, Culpepper popped out on an 0-2 count. Nothing special there. But no one was expecting what would happen in his next at-bat. With the Twins down 4-2 in the top of the 4th inning, Culpepper found himself in an 0-2 count again vs. lefty Shane Drohan.
Announcers Brian Anderson and Bill Schroeder can be heard describing him as, “He’s always been a confident guy”. We would see that confidence as Culpepper would demolish a four-seamer to left-centerfield for a solo home run and his first major league hit, to make it a 1 run game.
The Twins went on to win the game 8-6, receiving contributions from every MLB Bro they had in the lineup that night. Austin Martin ended his day with a hit, an RBI, and a walk. Royce Lewis had himself a 2-hit day, and Josh Bell had 4 hits including a home run. 1 game later, Culpepper would get himself a walk and a run in a 4-3 loss vs. the Brewers.
Great Start For Culpepper: Surrounded By Bros
It’s an exciting start for the 23 year old shortstop. So far the home run is his only MLB hit in nine at-bats, but he looks destined to be the Twins franchise shortstop. T He’ll be developing alongside other Bros in outfielder Austin Martin and pitcher Taj Bradley , while he simultaneously has the opportunity to be mentored by Royce Lewis and highly respected veteran Josh Bell. The Twins currently sit 4 games back of first place in the AL Central as they continue to be better than expected this season. Culpepper can help them make a last minute playoff push. They have something special on their hands as they look to build around a couple of potential future stars during a time where they desperately need them.
