It will be very tough for the Minnesota Twins to reach the playoffs this year as they did in 2024. Because we are into the last month of the regular season many teams in this situation look at their current roster talent a bit closer than normal with an eye for the future. Simeon Woods Richardson looks to have a bright big league future.
The young right-handed pitcher is with his third organization and the Twins believe he has a tremendous upside. Woods Richardson was selected in the second round of the 2018 Major League Baseball draft (48th overall) by the New York Mets. His stay with that organization was short lived as he was traded to the Toronto Blue Jays farm system in July 2019.
He pitched his way out of A ball in 2021 but also found himself with another organization in July of that season when he was traded to the Twins. Woods Richardson worked his way up the ladder with stops in Double-A Wichita and Triple-A St. Paul before getting to make his Major League debut as a starting pitcher on October 2, 2022. With another spot start in 2023 under his belt, he became a regular in the Twins rotation in 2024 and posted a 5-5 record over 28 starts. He has been back and forth at Triple-A St. Paul this year and has also battled a brief illness but is still contributing with a 5-4 record through the end of August.
Woods Richardson will be 25 years old at the end of September but knows his American history. The season opening road trip was in St. Louis and he visited the historic Old Courthouse. “A lot of historical things happened in that courthouse,” he said to the Twins social media team. “There’s Dred Scott Way,” he pointed out. “One of the most important cases took place here,” he added about the case of freedom in the mid 1800’s.
The native of Sugarland, Texas has a variety of interests with drawing a specialty. If it’s a particular person, a portrait may be produced or if it’s a given road trip it may be the landscape around him that gets sketched out.
The offseason may find Woods Richardson cooking or fishing since he has a bit more time available. Having participated in Twins Fest each of the last three years Woods Richardson is becoming more popular with the fans. He will probably make at least four starts during the month of September and now has the ability to help the Twins close out 2025 on a good note.
