The current shortstop for the Washington Nationals checks off a lot of good boxes. Young (check), he’s an MLBbro (check), and he is part of a current wave of players that hails from the Atlanta area (check).
CJ Abrams is making some noise at the top of the lineup and has a great chance of being a member of the Nationals lineup for a very long time. Washington has a lot of youth on their roster and Abrams is right in the middle of it.
CJ Abrams Was Key Piece In Juan Soto Trade With Padres
Abrams began his professional career with the San Diego Padres where he was a first round selection (sixth overall) in the 2019 baseball draft. He hit .401 in rookie ball that season but Covid-19 wiped out the 2020 Minor League campaign. He jumped off to a great start in the 2021 season at Double A San Antonio and was selected to play in the All Star Futures game. Unfortunately an injury kept him from participating and his season ended with a healthy .296 batting average.
The Padres knew what they had in Abrams and he started the second game of the 2022 season for them at shortstop. He went back and forth to Triple A El Paso but continued to handle the bat well for the Padres top farm club as a .314 hitter. San Diego wasn’t the only Major League team that saw his value.
On August 2, 2022 Abrams was part of an eight player trade that would send him along with fellow bro James wood and four others to Washington in exchange for Juan Soto and MLBbro Josh Bell. Not more than two weeks later Abrams was wearing the Nationals big league uniform and has been ever since.
Abrams has earned the starting shortstop job and has played full seasons at the demanding position in both 2023 and 2024. He solidified himself as one of the game’s better shortstops with an appearance in the 2024 All Star game.
Where Does CJ Abrams Go From Here?
The upward trajectory is fantastic. With more than a month left in the 2025 regular season the 24 year old is on pace to have a career high in every offensive category. The Alpharetta, Georgia native is certainly leading a charge of young MLBbro’s from the peach state who are contributing to their teams. Abrams is riding a five gamehitting streak through August 17 and while the Nationals won’t make the post season watching Abrams over the next six weeks will be fun for all baseball fans. He’s a big part of the future.
