The New York Yankees placed second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. on the 10-day Injured List on Friday (retroactive to Wednesday) because of a right oblique strain he suffered Tuesday against the Baltimore Orioles. He is expected to be out for four to six weeks.

Jazz injured the oblique in the first inning on Tuesday while facing right-hander Kyle Gibson. After fouling off the first pitch of the at-bat, he was seen grimacing in pain and reaching for his left side. He stayed in the game, though, and tripled to right field. After gingerly sliding into third base safely, he was taken out of the game in favor of Oswald Peraza.

After New York’s 15-3 victory, Chisholm told local reporters that he didn’t expect to miss a lot of time. However, he was in shock after learning he would be out for a lengthy period.

“It’s a high-grade strain,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. “I talked to him a couple of minutes ago. He even said, ‘I couldn’t believe it.’ He feels pretty good. So, we’ll see. I think it’s going to be some time. In his mind, it’s going to be real quick, but I think it’s going to be a while. We’ll see how he heals up.”

Before being placed on the IL, Chisholm had a slash line of .181/.304/.410 with seven home runs and 14 RBI. In his absence, Jorbit Vivas is expected to see most of the time at second base. Vivas was productive for Triple A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, hitting .319 with two home runs, 15 RBIs and a .426 on-base percentage.
