Daz Cameron has been around the game of baseball since he was a young boy. He grew up watching his father, Mike Cameron, who played for 17 years and had 278 career bombs.
Now, Daz is putting himself in a position to have an MLB career like his father. The 24-year-old is currently playing in the Detroit Tigers’ organization for the Triple A-affiliate, Toledo Mud Hens.
According to MLB.com, Daz is the ninth-ranked prospect throughout the organization and the Tigers still have high hopes for the second-generation MLBbro.
The skilled outfielder made his MLB debut during the 2020 COVID-shortened season with the Tigers.
His first big league hit came on September 11, an RBI single off Chicago White Sox starter Lucas Giolito. Making the feat even more memorable was the fact that his father connected for his first career hit in Chicago too.
“For him to have his first hit and for me to get my first hit here is kind of surreal,” he said to the Detroit Free Press. “It’s something I’ll remember forever.”
Daz finished the season batting .193 with three RBI in 17 games.
The Tigers decided to option Daz to Toledo at the start of the 2021 season. So far, he’s had success playing with the Mud Hens.
He faced a minor setback after the 2020 season. Our MLB bro played in the Puerto Rican Winter League during the offseason and found out that he was diagnosed with a sprained ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow.
In an article from the Detroit Free Press that was published in March, Daz talked about the experience of trying to play through the pain.
“I tried to play through it,” Cameron said. “That didn’t work out. … I told the manager down there to just give me a couple of days. After a couple of days, my arm still wasn’t good.”
Tigers’ manager AJ Hinch believes Daz will appear in the majors again.
“His attention to detail with his outfield work has been good,” Hinch said. “I think his athleticism is obvious. We’ve got to get him back in center field when he gets back to playing in the outfield and give him more time out there given his jumps and his speed, and then see if we can develop him as a center fielder.”
“Bat speed is there. Strength is coming. We got to get him healthy, get him back to playing multiple positions in the outfield. He’s already been a big leaguer. I think he’s going to be a big leaguer. We just have to get it all together before we can figure out where he fits.”
Through nine games with the Mud Hens, he’s batting .350 with nine RBI and seven runs scored. He’s getting off to a hot start early on in the season and if he can continue to have this kind of success, he’ll find himself back on the Tigers’ roster.
It’s certainly going to be a battle for Daz as he’s competing with Jacoby Jones, who has spent five seasons with the Tigers.
Jones is currently with the Mud Hens and the competition will only fuel Daz to compete at a high level.
Daz has displayed his abilities throughout his minor league career. He started his professional career with the Houston Astros, who selected him with the 37th overall pick in the 2015 draft.
In 2017, Daz was traded to the Tigers in a deal involving Justin Verlander.
The Tigers were high on the talented outfielder and when he gets that opportunity to suit up for Motown’s baseball team, he will take full advantage of it.
