Two decades after Major League Baseball opened its first Youth Academy on a converted athletic field in Compton, the league’s grassroots network has found a new home in South Florida.
The Miami Marlins, MLB and the City of Hialeah officially unveiled the Miami Marlins MLB Youth Academy at Babcock Park. Miami is the 10th city to join a program that has quietly become one of baseball’s most important pipelines for the game’s next generation.
The designation is the latest step for a program already thriving at Babcock Park, now transformed by a wave of renovations built to last. Three fields have been upgraded, a new synthetic turf surface installed, and the complex’s indoor baseball facility enhanced, all part of a partnership among the Miami Marlins Foundation, MLB, the City of Hialeah and the Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation. The result is a year-round facility built to serve players from their first swing through their last high school at-bat.
That range is by design. The Academy welcomes youth ages 5 to 18, with programming spanning Tee Ball, Coach Pitch and Kid Pitch divisions, softball, the Marlins’ Nike RBI chapter and a full slate of development clinics. Since January 2023, more than 5,700 young athletes across Miami-Dade and Broward counties have come through its programs and the newly expanded footprint is built to grow.
Miami now joins a network that stretches from Compton, the first Youth Academy to open in 2006, to sites in Houston, New Orleans, Cincinnati, Washington, Philadelphia, Texas and Kansas City. The mission across all of them has remained consistent, growing the game, cultivating diversity throughout it, and giving urban communities a genuine pathway from Tee Ball to college ball and beyond.
Youth Academy alumni have gone on to reach the Major Leagues, including Aaron Hicks, J.P. Crawford and Hunter Greene, while 13 alumni currently play in the Minor Leagues and 50 more suit up in college baseball and softball programs nationwide. Every summer,
With its official designation, Babcock Park inherits that standard, along with MLB branding and national support befitting the milestone. The real work continues to grow organically at the ground level. Miami’s newest generation of players will be able to learn, compete and grow through the game in a newly enhanced Youth Academy that expands access to baseball and softball throughout South Florida.
