NEW YORK – The Toronto Blue Jays received a scare during their 3-2 loss to the Mets at Citi Field on Saturday night. Right fielder George Springer left the game in the bottom of the eighth inning after suffering back spasms while making an attempt to catch a flyball hit by Jesse Winker.
Toronto doesn’t know if Springer will miss any games. It should have more information by Sunday morning.
With runners on second and third, two outs and the Blue Jays leading, 2-0, left-hander Brendon Little was unable to get that final out of the inning. With the count, 1-2, Winker hit a deep fly ball to right and, in an attempt to catch the ball, Springer crashed into the wall as the ball rolled by him for a two-run triple, scoring Francisco Lindor and Juan Soto, to tie the score.
Springer managed to retrieve the ball and throw it back to the infield but then fell to the ground and had a tough time getting up. He had to be helped into the dugout and was replaced by Nathan Lukes.
George Springer Crashes Into Wall, Doesn’t Need MRI
“We are not scheduling an MRI or anything. It’s the way he hit the wall. It was a cold night. We’ll see how he is tomorrow. It seems like it’s all muscular right now,” Blue Jays manager John Schneider said. “… He wasn’t feeling great. Just checking in with him after the game, he feels a little bit better, but you hate to see that [injury], obviously.”
Springer is having a nice comeback season. Entering Sunday’s action, he has a slash line of .379/.455/.621 with a homer and five RBIs. According to Schneider, Springer is a different hitter than the one that hit a career low .220 in 2024.
“He is a little bit different mechanically,” Schneider said. “He has a really simple mind set of just trying to take a good swing on at least one pitch every single at-bat – not worrying about trying to guide it somewhere or getting too bogged down with what he is sitting on. It’s a pretty simple approach and … just concentrating on taking a good swing.”
