Charles Nyonga gives his Two Cents on Cubs blue chip prospect Brennen Davis, who won the MLB All-Star Futures Game in July after slamming two homers.
Davis tore through Double AA this season. He is currently the No.14 prospect in all of baseball (as of August 24th) and the King Fish in the entire Cubs organization.
Major League Baseball recently updated their top 100 prospects over the weekend, which featured three bros in the top 30 like Cincinnati Reds pitcher Hunter Greene and shortstops Kahlil Watson of the Miami Marlins and C.J. Abrahams of the San Diego Padres. But there is a riser upon the horizon.
While those bros are becoming household names, future superstar Jordan Alexander Walker from the St. Louis Cardinals is making a name for himself. Walkers’ acclivity through the ranks is the stuff made of legend. But this is what the Redbirds expected when they selected the third baseman, 21st overall, in last year’s MLB Draft.
The 2020 MLB Virtual Draft was a watershed Draft for the revival of Baseball’s chocolate talent pipeline.
The selections of Ed Howard by the Cubs and Jordan Walker by the Cardinals mark the first time ever that two alumni of the MLB Breakthrough Series – a diversity-focused, amateur development experience by MLB & USA Baseball – have been selected in the first round of the MLB Draft.
We are the ones late to the party.
Jordan Walker homered on the first pitch of his pro career 👀
The buzz is beyond apropos as the 63rd- ranked prospect is batting .324 with 80 hits, 47 runs, 33 RBI, 22 doubles, nine home runs with eight stolen bases, and two triples for the Peoria Chiefs; Not to mention his glovework on the hot corner!
What can't Cardinals 2020 1st round pick Jordan Walker do?
Walker told KSDK News about his infield play, “I’m really working on my defense right now. I feel my defense is really behind on my hitting right now. Working with (Jose Oquendo) has been mind-blowing. He showed me plenty of other ways to be more consistent.”
He went on to say, “I trust him with any part of the game. It’s not just fielding, but he has given me tips on base running, hitting, but mainly fielding. He showed me different situations I should be thinking about, where I should be on the cut-off if it’s hit in left field, knowing the outfielder’s arm (strength), and things like that. Just the whole aspect of the game.”
Check out the size of this young man. He is not human.
The 6’5 240lb 19-year-old is strong as an ox with cat-like reflexes. The way the ball pops off of his bat leaves defenders shaking in their cleats.
The diamond has become a safe haven for 2019-2020 Georgia Gatorade Baseball Player of the Year, where he hit .457 with four home runs in just 16 games. He had an on-base plus slugging percentage of 1.555 before the Global pandemic shut down the rest of his senior season.
Those numbers had top-notch academia like Duke salivating over his presence before he ultimately took his talents to the show, where he signed a $2.9 million deal.
Walker (now 19), came in hot at age 18, while at the alternate site for the Cardinals.
His play outgrew his stay as he quickly got promoted to Palm Beach, where he later worked his way up to High-A Peoria, where he currently stands today.
@jwalker0522 First long ⚾️ in front of the home fans at Dozer Park ties the game at 2.
Let’s take a second to marvel at the kids’ genetics and God-given talent. He has the total package, and he hasn’t even grown into his man body yet. The future is looking bright, and he knows it.
“I’m (going to) work hard and try to get what I want. Control what I can control. If I put in the work, then hopefully, the results will show. My whole mentality is to get to the next level.”
Detroit Tigers outfielder Derek “Thrill” Hill has made the most of his opportunity after being recalled from Triple-A Toledo for the second time this season.
The Tigers recalled Hill on July 16 and Hill has given the team a reason to keep him on board.
Hill recently achieved a memorable accomplishment.
On August 8, the Tigers took on the Cleveland Indians.
On the mound for the Indians was Zach Plesac. It was the top of the second inning with two runners on and two outs and Hill was up to bat.
Hill connected on a two-strike pitch that left the yard and what made it special was that it was the first home run of his career.
While he has not been an everyday starter, Hill has made an impact being on the team.
The 25-year-old has faced some adversity this season when he suffered a shoulder sprain colliding with a wall back in June.
But that did not stop our MLBbro from getting back to the field and performing at a high level.
The former first round pick has done nothing but tear it up in the minors this season and now he’s looking to do that in the majors.
Before being recalled in July, Hill hit .320 with four home runs and 15 RBI in 33 games down in Toledo.
With those numbers, the Tigers had no choice but to give him an opportunity. Now that he’s in the Motor City, he’s hitting .260 with 20 hits and eight RBI through 27 games.
Every time he steps on that field, Hill is being evaluated and he knows that he has to continue to play out of his mind if he wants to remain on the team throughout the season.
As things stand, he has a good chance of finishing the season in a Tigers’ uniform.
Dodgers top pitching prospect Josiah Gray was traded to the Washington Nationals as part of a blockbuster deal for Max Scherzer and All-Star SS Trea Turner.
Gray will join fellow Melanated Mound Marauder Joe Ross in the Nats rotation.
God, Family and Baseball are the three things that Indians outfielder Daniel “Jet” Johnson lives for.
While he battles to earn a permanent spot on the Big League roster, he has already found success in the world of entrepreneurship.
Johnson is getting a chance to prove himself at the Major League level as his Cleveland Guardians have been decimated with injuries this year.
The Guardians recently lost fellow MLBbro Josh Naylor who is out the remainder of the season after suffering a gruesome leg injury.
#Indians OF prospect Daniel Johnson with his 9th HR of the season tonight! Johnson extended his hitting streak to 7 straight games. He has hit 4 HR's now over those 7 games for Columbus.
Off the field Johnson is already proving he is more than an athlete.
He and some friends from his hometown created a sportswear brand called “God, Family, Baseball.”
It is a movement as well as a lifestyle, striving to see young talent work hard and succeed both on and off the field.
Johnson is joined by MLBbro J.R. Davis, who was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the15th round of the 2016 draft out of Oklahoma State. Armani Smith, an outfielder in the San Francisco Giants organization is also down with the team.
From t-shirts, hats, workout wear, socks, fanny-packs and of course masks, G.F.B. has swag for any occasion.
The brand also continually gives back to their community. During May of 2020, GFB held their third annual homeless give back where they provided Hot plates, hygiene products and clothes to over 100 people in Vallejo, California.
They also post different motivational quotes, workout videos and highlights from each other’s journey to the Bigs.
On the field Johnson is trying to stand alone and make a name for himself. He was drafted by the Washington Nationals in the fifth round of the 2016 MLB Draft out of New Mexico State University.
After batting .515 in his final year at Jesse M. Bethel High School in his hometown of Vallejo, California he went undrafted in the 2013 draft and decided to attend Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College.
During his freshman season he recorded a .274 batting average and two home runs before transferring.
At one point Johnson was the 10th ranked player in the Nationals system and even won the teams Minor League Player of the Year award in 2017.
However, in November of 2018 he was sent to Cleveland in a deal for veteran catcher Yan Gomes.
Johnson played in the 2019 Futures Game and was promoted to the 40-man roster at the end of that season.
He debuted in the Majors on July 25th of 2020 but struggled at the plate, batting just .083 in just five games.
This season Johnson was brought up to help platoon in right field for the injured Eddie Rosario.
Through 15 games he has a .205 batting average with 8 runs. He also has two home runs, the first of his career coming in front of his friends and family at the Oakland Coliseum earlier this July.

Even though his Indians are nearly 10 games back of the Chicago White Sox for first place in the American League Central, they are only five back of the final wild card spot.
Since injuries have derailed their season, especially in the starting rotation, it is very possible the Indians become sellers at the trade deadline.
If that is the case, Johnson should get multiple opportunities to prove he can be a part of a potential championship lineup going forward as the Guardians establish the foundation for a new future.
