Happy 90th Birthday To The ‘Say Hey Kid’ Willie Mays
Willie Mays is way more than just the best all-around player to grace the MLB diamond. He’s an institution and one of baseball’s incomparable treasures. The prototype for legendary Black baseball players ranks fifth in MLB history behind Babe Ruth, Walter Johnson, Cy Young and his godson, Barry Bonds, in career Wins Above Replacement (156.1).
Mays ranks 6th all-time in homers with 660 and he finished his career with 3,283 hits and almost 2000 RBI. Mays is arguably the most exciting superstar in baseball history. Those who have ever seen him run the bags, steal bases or track down a fly ball in the gap tend to agree.
“Willie Mays is the best player that ever lived,” said Orlando Cepeda, who played with Mays from 1958-1966. “He is the best outfielder, the best baserunner.”
Happy Birthday to the Say Hey Kid, a legendary, game-changing Black Knight whose legacy continues to inspire generations of baseball players to this day.
